Bertin was a substitute Tac for about a week. In fact, I personally
remember him very well. As you know, we all had to have a picture of
someone or something in the 4 x 6 frame on our study desk. One night,
during study hall, I had my feet up on my desk and was reading a newspaper.
Bertin came by and slammed his fist on my desk so hard he knocked the
frame right off the desktop and it hit the floor face down. He ordered
me to pick it up, but I refused, stating: "Sir, Candidate Makulski, sir...
I did not knock it off my desk, you did, so I am not picking it up." He
was outraged and ordered me again to pick it up. Again, I stated the same
response. Finally, he bent over and picked it up...and his face turned
beet red when he saw the picture. In the frame I had placed a picture
of Jesus. He gently put the picture (with broken glass) on my desk and
quietly walked away. That, as I recall, was the last time I ever saw him.
Mike Makulski back in '69 "When I returned from Nam in '69, I got my
Captain's bars and was sent to Seattle for the Sixth Army Recruiting Main
Station. I worked 19 colleges throughout Washington, Oregon and Idaho...
recruiting soon to be grads for the OCS program".
