NOTE (Warr)
Joseph Smith was the oldest candidate in the company (I think 32 --
Actually from his gravestone below DOB Sep 1936 made him only 30). He had
a great deal of prior service. His experience and intellect earned him
honor graduate. He was the only casualty of class 17-67. KIA in 1969.
From Arlie:
I am sorry that Joe got killed. He was a quiet but strong person during OCS.
I had a few talks with him. Silent waters run deep. Arlie
From John Moore
I served in Vietnam with Joseph John Smith. He was a platoon leader
in B Troop 3/4 Cav 25th ID. I was in A Troop. Did not know him.
He was wounded on 26 Jan 69 and died on 4 Feb 69. On 26 Jan 1969 B Troop,
3/4 Cavalry, had two men killed and one fatally wounded in a night engagement
in the "Angel's Wing" area of Tay Ninh Province, near the Cambodian border.
